Cheer up for parents of CS/SE/CE kids — By ff2021
AI has been making a lot of noise lately, and the existing internet industry has begun to prepare for the changes. Those in the IT industry are always at the forefront of such changes. Based on current trends, AI is likely to be the biggest technological divide in the past 20 years. In the future, CS/SE may see significant growth.
AI is gradually taking over some entry-level programming jobs, and in the future, students graduating in CS/SE can skip entry-level jobs and work directly in mid-level jobs, significantly improving efficiency. Unlike when I first started working, where I mainly did some PG wiping jobs.
The social issues brought about by AI will require professional knowledge in CS/SE, and the United States is leading the way in this regard. Several relevant laws have been enacted in New York State in recent years, and many new industries will emerge in the future.
If the IT industry is divided among Chinese, Indian, and Caucasian people, then in the field of AI, Chinese people definitely account for two-thirds. Almost all research and development organizations have Chinese participation. It is rare to see AI-related papers without Chinese names on them.
Currently, there is no industry that does not rely heavily on IT. Having attended some conferences purely related to software, I found that the major sponsors were finance, retail, and even the automotive industry (before electric vehicles). Their demand for IT talent far exceeds that of the pure IT industry.
My former IT colleagues and friends are spread across various industries. Due to the standardization of the software industry, everyone can seamlessly switch from one industry to another, which is almost impossible in other professions.
Speaking of money, the amount you can earn is basically proportional to the number of people you serve. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, even if they are open 24 hours a day, have a limited number of high-quality clients they can serve due to geographical limitations, and there is a ceiling to their income. IT is different, especially in the internet industry, where you can serve a massive number of customers simultaneously, with no geographical limitations, and with no significant change in costs. The internet industry has raised the bar, determining the essence of high salaries in the IT industry.
Everyone thinks AI is powerful and wants to use it in their industry. Do you know how to implement it? No? Excellent, this makes it easy to deceive. This trend is much more significant than previous ones, such as big data, cloud computing, cryptocurrencies, and the metaverse (looking back over the past 20 years, we find that we have been fooled by IT people).
Which country does not need AI talent now? Which country does not regard AI as its most important national strategy? If you train your child to be such a strategic talent in your family, do you still need to worry about employment and high salaries? Parents, you need to grasp the general direction. If your child has a talent for science and engineering, encourage them to study CS/SE, learn mathematics, seize opportunities, and stand at the forefront of the times. Of course, this does not apply to more traditional fields like medicine and law!
