Sun is dropping support for Solaris 9 on Intel. Also the binary download for Solaris 8 on Intel has been removed from their site ...

If you want Solaris 8 for Intel you'll have to pay US$45 to order the media kit, which is not too bad considering that the media kit contains more than what you can download before.

There are lengthy discussions in the related newsgroups with mixed feelings. Some say it's good that Sun can avoid stinky x86 users and those who really want to run Solaris will run it on *real* computers, and Sun's entry level UltraSparc is cheap now (with US$995 you can have a Sun Blade 100). Others condemned the move saying that Sun is killing itself just like DEC before.

Personally I'm not too concerned since I just picked up an Ultra 10 from an auction although at not very cheap price.

But, is it a good move for Sun?
