Day trip is "0" dollars amount. It is up to the officer at the booth to decide if he wants to send you in to pay HST or not. I have been sent in twice, both time I bought about 200.00USD worth of cloth, shoes etc.

and every time it is at Rainbow bridge. Declare the full amount ( of course, if you can wear anything on you or carry the bag you bought, throw away the receipt...), whatever you can't , declare..., better be honest than being fined...
last time i went with a freind of mine. we both declared honestly everthing i paid HST about 40CAD. After payment, we came out and there was a female officer waiting there and she told me to open the door of the car and the truck . And she took the receipt and went through our purchase. She then entered my car and searched under the seats, searched my cosmetic bag and all compartments in the car. Found nothing and said " you are good to go".
