Jabber's English Note---dump

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Yesterday, one of my colleagues told us that his son had been dumped 3 times by his girl friends this year. That hit on my nerve. I felt this can be a good topic.

In Chinese, we are used to saying that "Mou(3) Mou(3) Shi(1) Lian(4) Le". I have heard one guy said he had fell out of love. I don't know whether that's right. But I do believe it is OK to say the following: She was just dumped by her boy friend. Or He has been dumped by his girl friend.

Another example is "Mou(3) Mou(3) Zai(4) Tan(2) Lian(4) Ai(4)". Put it in English, it reads somebody is dating. Maybe your roommate is dating. Mayby your daughter is dating. In any case, there is no word-for-word translation.

From the above simple examples, I got a feeling it is too challeging to translate Chinese into English. Rather than translate Chinese into English, I would spend time following English speakers' examples.

By the way, if you are laid off by an employer, you may say you have been dumped. Of course, there is no much respectfulness as saying so. For instance, I am gonna be dumped by my employer soon. :-)更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • A footnote for you. Take care, man.
What Happens When You Fall In Love With:

A chef? (You get buttered up.)

A chauffeur? (You get taken for a ride.)

A gambler? (He cheats on you.)

A telephone operator? (He gives you a phone-y line.)

      A trashman? (He dumps you.)

      A clockmaker? (He two-times you.)

A pastry cook? (He desserts you.)

A shoe salesman? (He walks all over you.)

An elevator operator? (He lets you down.)

An artist? (He gives you the brush.)

A jogger? (He gives you the run-around.)
      • I'm doing well. Thank you.
